Silkwood is located on the fringe of Sydney city occupying a disused triangular-shaped parcel of land. A mixed-use brief with a residential, commercial and auditorium programme has permitted the development of a building with several programs; auditorium, office and urban housing.
The auditorium entry provides separation to the adjacent heritage brick building. The commercial spaces create a base above which are 48 apartments that take on a courtyard typology and are generally north facing and cross ventilated. Sculptural skylights within the residential courtyard enhance the amenity to the office below by providing natural light deep in the plan.
At street level tactile materials including timber, stone, masonry, corten steel and galvanized steel are used while above there is a robust palette of precast concrete with metal cladding and operable shading devices.
