Kafeel Hotel

Karbala, Iraq

Date
2015

Use
Hospitality

Site Area
16,400 sqm

Gross Floor Area
74,330 sqm

The Kafeel Hotel will provide a state of the art, 5-star hotel, resort, gardens, and recreational facilities for pilgrims and visitors to this important holy city. An enhanced architectural language is developed to sensitively incorporate Islamic typologies including, the mashrabiya screen, the archway, and the walled-paradise garden.

The enclosure to the building utilises a highly expressive skin based on the 8-pointed star tessellation formed into a protective veil. This distinctive façade provides a landmark identity for the hotel as well as mediating the challenging environmental conditions.

The project is to deliver a global benchmark for sustainable hotels providing carbon and water neutrality as well as utilising renewable energy resources.
